Lime plaster permits the walls to breathe, and is vitally important in an older property. It will prolong the life of any historic building, keeping it damp free and warm. All of the oldest buildings still standing today were built using lime mortar, proof that it should be the material of choice when a building constructed in this manner is to be repaired and renovated. Lime plaster allows moisture to evaporate out as part of the breathing process, rather than trapping it in.
Lime mortar, lime plasters and lime renders are a natural, breathable coating used in old buildings constructed with a porous brick, or with timber framed panels. The panels were often in-filled with wattle and daub, and
lime render
was applied as the external finish coat, with lime plaster used internally.
